Optima
Complex melange of inviting deep blueberry, cassis and spicy cocoa aromas. The palate is fresh and lively with an abundance of the same blueberry, cassis and cocoa flavours. Structured and graceful with velvety, soft-textured mouth feel and lovely integration of oak and fruit. Complex, nuanced and subtly powerful, nothing is overplayed. Delicious, lingering tail.

In the Cellar
After a careful process of identifying the top terroir for each cultivar, sites were identified, assessed and then selected. Grapes were tested and tasted for ripeness by the winemakers on a daily basis. Vineyards were selected from different sites in the Western Cape and each varietal paired to a selected soil, climate and slope. In 2014 the grapes were handpicked in the early morning, placed in lug boxes and transported in refrigerated trucks to arrive at the cellar. The grapes were then sorted on a double-sorting table. After the cold-soaking, fermentation started and lasted for about 20 days. Malolactic fermentation took place in 225 new French oak barrels and 10000 wooden tanks. The wines were made and aged separately for 18 months in 225 French oak barrels (35% new oak). The wines were blended and aged for a further 6 months in barrel and tank and bottle-matured for 24 months before release.
About the winery: Anthonij Rupert
From its home base on historic L' Ormarins wine farm beneath the jagged peaks of the Groot Drakenstein mountain in Franschhoek, Anthonij Rupert Wyne has cast its net wide, across the length and breadth of the Cape Winelands, in search of what it takes to make the finest wines this corner of the wine-making world has to offer.
The Franschhoek Region
The valley of Franschhoek has retained its French Huguenot character, which is reflected in the names of many of the wine farms, guesthouses and restaurants. The valley offers visitors numerous walks and biking trails in the surrounding mountains, and many farms offer trout fishing in streams and dams, as well as horse riding. Vines are planted on the banks of rivers and up mountain slopes, resulting in a wide range of wines. The most widely planted white-wine varieties are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Semillon. Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot are the most widely planted red-wine varieties. The valley is mainly recognised for the quality of its Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Semillon — there are Semillon vines in the valley which are over 100 years old. Franschhoek is also regarded as one of South Africa’s leading Méthode Cap Classique (MCC) producing areas and has its own MCC route.
